Teri Walter is an AV-rated attorney with 25 years of experience in employment law and civil litigation. She handles a variety of litigation, including insurance defense, representing a diverse group of clients in employment disputes, personal injury, and property damage claims.
Teri represents employers in a variety of employment-related claims under state and federal law, such as discrimination, wrongful discharge, wage and hour violations, worker classification, enforcement of restrictive covenants, and leave issues. She practices in state and federal courts, as well as administrative agencies including the EEOC, Montana Human Rights Bureau, and Montana Department of Labor.
In addition to her litigation practice, Teri also provides consulting services to local, national, and international employers concerning risk prevention and day-to-day human resources management decisions such as hiring, performance management and discipline, grievances, investigations, leave issues, accommodations, layoffs, terminations, and unemployment insurance benefit claims. She drafts employment contracts, separation agreements, and policies. She advises and conducts training for management and supervisory personnel.
Teri manages a statewide practice serving a diversified clientele including technology, retail, hotels/luxury resorts, hospitals/healthcare organizations, energy, telecommunications, as well as agricultural, timber, and construction industries.
Teri has been selected in U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Lawyers” in labor and employment law for more than a decade, and Best Lawyers named her Lawyer of the Year in employment management and litigation in 2014 and 2020. She is also named annually in Chambers USA Guide to Leading Lawyers in employment law since 2006.
Teri was raised on a farm and ranch in eastern Montana. She received her B.A. (magna cum laude) from Eastern New Mexico University. She earned her J.D. from California Western School of Law in San Diego in 1994. She served on the Advocacy Honors Board while in law school and served as counsel on the trial team, winning the state-wide trial competition in California and competing nationally in 1994.
Teri returned home to Montana in 1994 and began her law practice with Gough, Shanahan, Johnson & Waterman where she focused her practiced on civil litigation for 21 years. Teri then co-founded Hattersley Walter, PLLP with several partners in 2016.
